In the run-up to Art Trade, we introduce the participating artists by asking them some questions. Today: Niklas Hallman, who just graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and is planning his future.
What does an artist do throughout the day?
It purely depends on the time and reason of my status at the moment. It feels like my life goes in seasons. I don't constantly work and think on my ideas but I let them marinade. They are unconsciously active and my solution in relation to motivation and execution might happen whenever. Of course it demands tools and freedom; like space and time. It is hard to categorize one into a mold, like what would an artist do. I am young and I need to eat so of course optimally I wish I could be busy all the time with my art, without stressing outer facts. Everybody loves and hates money anyways!
Which artwork (well-known or unknown) do you wish you had made yourself?
Its funny to think like that, I mean obviously sometimes when u see a clever or touching work you relate to it and wish why on earth didn’t I come up with that, but that is what makes the coming together of art so important. I admire braveness and honesty. To not do what they want and what they need. My interests in art are also outside of the fine art world, for example music, film and skateboarding. Lately I have been following Frank Oceans moves on the internet and I just saw his show at the Flow Festival in Helsinki. He is a very pure being and people should pay close attention to how he behaves and what he decides to say and do. My friend Man Yau just had an excellent show in Helsinki too. And I've been following closely NinoMierGallerys moves for a while now.
What would you have become, if you weren’t an artist?
I'm still on my journey to become one. But honestly, I don't know. It is also a way of seeing and being but it doesn't have to be that special. I don't want to limit myself in one specific thing. I know I will one day direct a film and maybe another day I will become a plumber (maybe not haha), who knows!
Why do you think Art Trade is a good idea?
I'm curious about the event as an experiment of getting people together from different kinds of backgrounds but yet sharing the interests. I'm curious about the dedication of the artists but also much from the public in this specific event. One needs another and these kind of dynamics are crucially important in my world view.
What other projects are you working on?
I just graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and I am working on my portfolio plus skateboarding and doing music. I'm still not sure how all this is going to happen because the academy is a bubble and now its time to come out and see how the real world works. But mostly I'm busy with planning my future, what and where is the next stop. I come from Helsinki and have lived in Amsterdam for four years now and I consider both my homes. Maybe I need to find a new home somewhere soon! I might have a show in Brussels and there are some other planned things around the Benelux and Finland in my mind.
