Verhuisdier From Hell

  • Galerie Fleur & Wouter Van Ostadestraat 43a Amsterdam The Netherlands (map)

Inspiration is a strange phenomenon. It sometimes comes when you least expect it. Artist Johan Kleinjan (1974) has recently been under the spell of favourite animals (mainly dogs and cats) sent to him by his girlfriend from the website verhuisdieren.nl. Here, you can adopt an animal that has been kicked out of the house by someone else. He decided to make the animals and the unusual interiors of their soon-to-be ex-bosses the subject of a new series of drawings, which will be on display from April 13 in the project space of Galerie Fleur & Wouter.

However, it did not end with animals looking for a new home. During a late-night zap moment, he stumbled upon the TV programme 'My cat from hell'. In this show, a wannabe rock star with crazy beard helps people who can no longer cope with their hellish cats. These cats also became the subject of the artist's new series. The title was then also quickly found: Verhuisdier From Hell

Johan Kleinjan works in a distinctive unpolished style with particular use of colour. His artworks emerge from his fascinations, which include strange and ordinary things. In addition to his personal work, Kleinjan is part of the Antistrot collective with which he carried out joint projects such as murals and exhibitions until 2010. Since 2010, Johan has been a member of the Kamp Horst collective. Verhuisdier From Hell is his eighth exhibition with Galerie Fleur & Wouter.
